Until the Celebration Begins!
A National Day to Honor Those Who Led the Way
Mission
National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day was established to draw awareness to and appreciation of the lifetime of contributions made by LGBT older adults. The gains made in recent years toward LGBT equality sit squarely on the backs of those whose struggles and victories, extraordinary courage and everyday authenticity pioneered the path toward freedom. National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day works to unite the LGBTQ community and its allies to celebrate and thank those individuals who fought on behalf of us all.
History
In 2016, The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity of Chase Brexton Health Care officially added May 16th to the National Day registry as National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day. The inaugural event, which featured multi-media tributes to local LGBT elders, took place in and around the community room at Chase Brexton’s Baltimore, Maryland headquarters. More than 70 guests attended.
Today, the day of commemoration is a nationwide event with communities around the country joined together in celebration.
About The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity of Chase Brexton Health Care
Chase Brexton Health Care first opened its doors in 1978 as a clinic focused exclusively on the health care of gay men, a revolutionary and much-needed concept for its time. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Chase Brexton has expanded to serve patients of all ages, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
In 2015, Chase Brexton launched The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity to establish a safe space for LGBTQ individuals and their families to access information about accepting and competent service providers that help enhance quality of life. The center functions as an information clearinghouse and a space for education and training, and it develops community-based programming that adapts to the needs of LGBTQ individuals in the region.
Caring for LGBT older adults is a priority for The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity and Chase Brexton, and the inspiration behind the creation of National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day.
